Richard Thompson Obituary

Richard “Ricky” Lynn Thompson was born in Blytheville, Arkansas, on August 23, 1950.  He was the son of John H. Thompson and Martha Powell Thompson.

He departed this life in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on February 2, 2024.  He was 73 years old.

Ricky graduated from Caruthersville High School and then attended Walnut Ridge Junior College.  On August 29, 1969, in St. Louis, Missouri, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  He proudly served his country until August 27, 1973, at which time, he received his honorable discharge at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico.  During his time of service, he served as Air Operations Specialist with the Defense Command 552nd Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing.  He was deployed to Kwangju, South Korea, Korat, Thailand.  He also flew reconnaissance over Vietnam.  He received National Defense Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

On July 31, 1976, Ricky was united into marriage with Jacquline Taylor.  They celebrated 47 years of marriage. 

Ricky farmed with his father-in-law for three decades. They were very successful and had articles in the Mid-South Farmer and the Farm Forum written about their farming practices.  In 2005, Ricky took over the family farm and continued the family legacy. 

Ricky received the MSSDAR Patriotic Award for his outstanding service in the United States Air Force in July of 2022.  He was also a member of the American Legion, the Masons, and Shriners.

He enjoyed being a part of the local coffee club where he was known to speak his mind about whatever subject was being discussed.

He served as a trustee for the Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member.

He is survived by his wife: Jacquline (Jackie) Thompson of Caruthersville, Missouri; his daughter: Jamie Lynn Thompson of Caruthersville, Missouri; two sisters: Elizabeth Hightower (Mike) of Caruthersville, Missouri, & Mary Young of Marks, Mississippi; sister-in-law: Linda McClanahan (Jim) of Caruthersville, Missouri; a beloved grand dog: Murphy; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents whom he loved dearly, and his wife’s parents, James O. and Vernell Taylor.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 12:00 pm at Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church in Caruthersville, Missouri, with Reverend Carl Knapp officiating. Interment with military honors to follow in Little Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am.
