John Sellars Obituary

John Walter Sellars was born November 13, 1934 in Montier, Missouri. He was the son of the late James W. Sellars and Mary Wade Sellars.

He departed this life in Germantown, Tennessee on September 2, 2018. He was 83 years old.

On September 24, 1960, he was united in marriage to Rosemary King. She preceded him in death in 2009.

John attended Arkansas State University and received a B.S. in education. He then attended University of Memphis for his Masters.

John was an educator for 40 years. He began his teaching career in Essex, Missouri in 1959. In 1960 he moved to Caruthersville where he worked in the Caruthersville School system and the R-3 District as teacher and coach. In 1973, he became superintendent of the R-3 School District and served in the position for 25 years until his retirement in 1998. In 1992, he became the owner of the Globe Clothing Store in Caruthersville. He worked there until his death.

He proudly served in the Arkansas National Guard and in the United States Army.

He was a member of the Caruthersville First Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and as a deacon for 20 years. He served three terms as president of the Caruthersville Rotary Club. He served as the secretary/treasurer of the Pemiscot County Teachers Association and was a member of the Tri-District Teachers Association for 23 years. In addition, he also served as a Cub Scout leader, baseball coach, softball coach and was a faithful supporter of the annual R-3 Party fundraiser.

Survived by: 1 son - Johnny Sellars (Karen) - Caruthersville, Missouri

1 daughter - Kathy Sellars - Dyersburg, Tennessee

He was preceded in death by his parents -James and Mary Sellars, his wife – Rosemary Sellars, 2 brothers - James G. (Bobby) Sellars and David W. Sellars and a sister - Effie Jane (Sis) VanWinkle

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 12:00 PM at the Caruthersville First Baptist Church with Brother Jimmy Lemonds officiating. Interment was in the Bethany Cemetery in Campbell, Missouri.

Pallbearers were: Dickie McClendon, Jim DeReign, Michael King, Jeffrey King, Gary Figgins, Steve King, Gene Lewis, and Bill Clayton
