Helen O’Neal Pierce Hinchey was born in Caruthersville, Missouri on July 4, 1924, to Otho Pierce and Lucille Buchanan Pierce Greenway.
She departed this life following a brief illness at her home in Caruthersville on January 5, 2024. She was 99 years old.
Helen graduated from Caruthersville High School in May of 1942 and was united in marriage on June 4, 1942, to Mr. Harold Lloyd Hinchey. They celebrated 58 years of marriage before his death in 2000.
Helen served as scout leader for both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts when her children were involved in scouting. She attended many sporting events and school events for not only her own children but also her grandchildren.
She was a skilled bridge player. She started playing when she was in high school and played in 4 different clubs, where she was often the winner, until her 95th birthday.
Helen joined Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church when she was 12 years old and faithfully served until her health declined the last few years. She taught Sunday school, worked with youth activities, and was involved in women’s groups.
She is survived by four children: Harold L. Hinchey, Jr. (Francille) of Tupelo, MS, Cynthia Crayne of Caruthersville, MO, Otho Pierce Hinchey (Bonnie) of Richmond, CA, & Janet Buck (Rob) of Arlington, TN; one sister: Ann Smith of Paducah, KY; 11 grandchildren: Tom McLeod, Scott McLeod, Cynthia McLeod, Tim McLeod, Chris McLeod, Jamie Harpole, Rex Moore, Carley Johnston, Kelley Adams, Ryan Crayne, Nathan Hinchey; 23 great grandchildren; 20 great-great grandchildren; a long time friend: Kathryn Parkinson; three wonderful care givers: Etta Bell, Renee Bates, & Peggy Johnson; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two daughters – Melinda McLeod & Becky Moore, a son-in-law – Harlin Crayne, a brother – Robert O. Pierce, a granddaughter – Camille Hinchey Carruth, and a great granddaughter – Katie Beth Carruth.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Carl Knapp officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church.
