Gene Edward Smith was born at Cottonwood Point, Missouri, on December 28, 1949. He was the son Pinkey Eugene Smith and Ossie Mae Horner Smith.
He departed this life on January 9, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 75 years old.
Gene was united in marriage to Gloria Boles on February 5, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He loved doing yard work and had quite a few yards that he took care of here in Caruthersville. He also enjoyed playing video games. Some of his favorites were Mario, Doctor Mario and poker. This was something he and his grandsons enjoyed doing together.
Gene was a very faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife: Gloria Smith; three daughters: Melanie Burkeen (Tim), Connie Sue Stone, and Tanja Royston; one sister: Shirley Smith; 12 grandchildren: Jessica Burks (Brett), John Hayes, Jimmy Burkeen (Maddie), Harlie Rhamy, Chasity, Brandon Head, Stormy Ward, John Royston, Maggie Royston, Hannah Burkeen, Jeremy Burkeen, and Timmy Burkeen; 16 great grandchildren; and other relatives, including nieces and nephews, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers – Junior and Jimmy, and two sisters – Doris and Carolyn.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the H.S. Smith Chapel with Reverend Ricky Lyle officiating. Interment to follow in Maple Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m.
