Mr. Elroy Jack Schoolcraft was born on May 16, 1932, to the late Christian Schoolcraft and Pasha Helmick Schoolcraft in Martinsville, Indiana.
He departed this life at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, on January 5, 2024. He was 91 years old.
Jack enlisted in the United States Army in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 1, 1949. He served in the Korean War where he received the Korean Service Medal, 4 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, and 2 Purple Hearts. He received his honorable discharge on June 10, 1953, at Camp Carson, Colorado.
Jack had a big personality. He loved telling stories from his time in the army. He was a NASCAR fan with his favorite racer being Dale Earnhardt. He was a mechanic that could fix just about any type of engine from cars to lawn mowers. If you saw Jack, you saw him with his cowboy boots and a cigar in his mouth.
He is survived by nine children: Kevin (Dorothy) Schoolcraft of Goldsboro, NC, Ronald (Kathy) Schoolcraft of Braggadocio, MO, Christopher Schoolcraft of Caruthersville, MO, Jackie (Cheryl) Schoolcraft of Caruthersville, MO, Floyd Schoolcraft of Caruthersville, MO, Michael Schoolcraft of Hayti, MO, Pam Schoolcraft of Caruthersville, MO, Jamie Schoolcraft of Caruthersville, MO, & Pasha Schoolcraft of Caruthersville, MO ; 24 grandchildren: Donna, Chastity, Kevin Dewayne, Shain, Shonae, Starla, Cassy, Jacklyn, Floyd, Joseph, Cathey, Destiny, Mikey, Megan, Matthew, Jace, Ava, Andrew, Emily, Ariana, Ramarion, Bariah, Braydon, & Blazynn; 25 great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife - Nadine (Moody) Schoolcraft, a son - John Schoolcraft, and several siblings.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024, at 11:00 am in the H.S. Smith Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele, MO, with military honors. Visitation will be held the evening prior on Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm in our chapel.
