On Monday, August 15, 2022, Tom Winter, loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 81.
Tom was born on November 16, 1940, in Brooklyn, NY to Franz Winter and Emilie (Renz) Winter. He grew up in Queens and Brooklyn, and after a failed attempt to circumnavigate the US Marine Corps’ age requirements, he attended Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania, earning a degree in history. Upon graduation, he pursued and attained a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, this time within the confines of the law.
Tom had many passions, the most notable of which was his family. His willingness to protect and care for those closest to him had no boundaries. This passion extended to those in his beloved community as well. A proud and active member of the Cooter United Methodist Church, he spent his entire life dedicated to the altruistic concept of service before self.
Tom is survived by his dear wife Phyllis of Steele, MO, his oldest son Tom of Dyersburg, TN, and his younger son Jeff and his wife Joyce of Winter Park, FL, and three wonderful grandchildren in Jacob, Jackson, and Julia. He is also survived by his older sister Emilie McSloy of Massapequa, NY, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Friday, August 19th, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Scott McQuay officiating in the H.S. Smith Chapel. Interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele, Missouri, with full military honors. H. S. Smith Funeral Home in charge of services.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Cooter United Methodist Church.
